6. How does the fantasy genre relate to modern media such as video games?
Currently, there are many famous computer and video game titles that fall into the fantansy genre. Some examples include the D&D series, Warcraft, Diablo, and Devil May Cry.
A Virtual world of Fantasy provides great immersion to game players involved. And indeed, most Fantasy based computer and video games are role-playing games. Or at least involve some form of role-playing.
I think that almost all fantasy is escapist in nature, and thus fits very well the escapism nvolved in the virtual worlds of Massive Multiplayer Online Role Paying Games.
6. I think fantasy always had and have influence video games. For instance, final fantasy, the war of the warcraft -its an online game, but it still has so much elements from fantasy genres, such as appearence of dragon, wizards etc.
I think J.k was affected by the pro-text A wizard of earthsea very much. Because she almost built her story Harry Potter based on it.
First of all, the location describtion such like the hall of the Magic in A Wizard of earthsea wroten: He stood in the innermost room of the House of the Wise, and it was open to the sky ...(U.lei, p38) in the Harry Potter J.k wrote that the hall of the Hpogwarts was charmed by the magic and the roof showing like the real sky with the real situation of the certain weather such like sunshine and cloudy in the daytime, or the star was twicking in the dark blue vlevet sky.
Secondly, the main story structure of the Harry Potter likes another fanfiction or the extented story for the A Wizard of the earthsea.
We almost can match the mainly charactors from A Wizard of earth to the Harry Potter.
Harry Ptter --Sparrowhawk
Shadow--you know who ...
Also both two stories talk about a boy who meddles too early with the Dark and a boy coming into his power and his man hood, coming of age.
However, J.k just extented the advantures of the boy wizard biger and more detail by his age growing.
4. I haven't read Harry Potter, but I still can point it out that, as Birdie mentioned, Ged and Harry shares the same basis of characters. For instance, they both fight against thier enemies. The second point is that both of them have friends who help them through as they solve thier problems. Ged had Vetch and Harry has Ron.
I agree with both Guo Fang and Maho for the ideas about the Q6. There are lots of RPG games relate to the fantasy genres such as "Harry Potter" for both PS2 or PC game.
Anyway, I think most of the fantasy genres are easy to let the game creators to have ideas because of the "magic", "two different worlds" , "wizards" or "Heros" etc... Most of the characters, magic items and their "worlds" are all being set by original books. Therefore, the game creators don't need to worry too much about the play and settings etc...
One more idea is that I think fantasy genre also relate to other new medias not only the video games also become an animate as well.
I was so amazed when I was reading The Wizard of Earthsea because it is practically a shorter version of Harry Potter!
There are so many similarities between two texts, it is hard to ignore.
Both of the stories share the same basic plot line:
Hero with super-talent, challenged by an ultimate evil, fought with it (with help of allies), and discover his true self on the way of slaying the evil and saving the world.
I thoroughly enjoyed Le Guinn's work albeit the negative gender depiction. (Which is OK, she acknowledge the females in the latter book)
After reading Wizard of Earthsea, I can't help but think it makes Harry Potter seems so puerile by comparison - with this wizard school and teenage boy thing.
There is true economy and magic and understand in Le Guinn's tale, I especially like this quote:
" You thought, once, as a boy, that a mage is one who can do anything. So I thought once. So did we all. And the truth is that as a man's real power grows and his knowledge widens, ever the way he can follow grows narrower: until at last he chooses nothing, but does only and wholly what he must do..."

Ok, ok, I know my answer might be a bit off the tangent. But, it’s still relevant, right? :P

Oh, on another note, do you think it is way too much of a coincidence that Rowling whipped out something so similar for Harry Potter?
("oh, it just came to me when I was sitting in the cafe with my pen and paper one day".)
OR it is indeed like what Vogler reckoned that all the stories share the same basic plotline?
There are indeed a lot of themes/concepts of today's video games derived from the fantasy genre.
Like Victor said, Harry Potter is a fine example of a book made into a video game.
I believe that video games is in some way, a fanfiction tribute to the original book.
Usually, there will be a side-story or an epilogue as the ultimate outcome of the game. (This may be a good way to attract fans of the original book to play the game so they can find out the ultimate end of the story).
Also, a fantasy genre based game will attract readers to play it as the player is able to 'be' the character himself experienced the adventure virtually.
Players are able to click on little buttons and type in cheat keys (if they are impatient to win)to navigate the game.
Many hours/days later, the perfect procrastination tool has finally served its ends because you've crack all the levels!
7. According to Cockrell (2004), study suggests that one of the primary belief among fundamentalist parents is that they believe fantasy equals deceit, that fantasy as well as story telling "will lead to lying plus other deceitful behavior." Furthermore, such aspect mingles with the necessity "to protect their children from evil forces in the fantasy world".
Some believes that books such as Harry Potter as well as other fantasy books "are orientational and instructional manuals of witchcraft woven into the format of entertainment". In addition, certain people even criticize Harry Potter by J.K Rowling teach witchcraft!
7. Man...I think these people should chill the heck out and find something better to do rather than wasting their life on ruining a piece of entertainment. Who the hell still believes in witchcraft in these days? These people are the reasons why so many awesome games were banned, such as Rockstar's Manhunt, it has been banned in New Zealand.
I agree with Victor that fantasy has elements which attracts people by magic, portion etc.
In addition, I also think that fantay makes people to acutally experience the "fantasy world". As Tolkein created sub-dimention for the Road of the ring, all fantasy creates its own world to explore.
I have another thoughts about the question seven, compare Rax's saying:
"People should chill the heck out and find something better to do rather than wasting their life on ruining a piece of entertainment. Who the hell still believes in witchcraft in these days? These people are the reasons why so many awesome games were banned, such as Rock star’s Manhunt; it has been banned in New Zealand."
I don't think that religious right in the US condemn fantasy because it is wasting for the ruining a piece of entertainment or believes in witchcraft. Actually, most of the fantasies works relate to the dark things such like the evil or courage the youth to fight with the bad power such like the dragon or sort of the black wizard. Those contents involved a lot of the violent features and encourage youth fight with the adult wizard or adult world. Those encouragement and affection will imply youth people in their growing way before they were mature enough to have a right mind to think about it.
Just like the Rock star’s Manhunt, it has been banned in many countries because of its violent implication for the younger players. Here is a quote of news from BBC recently.
"While we respect the authority of the classification board and will abide by the rules, we emphatically disagree with this particular decision," Rock star said in a statement released Tuesday. "Manhunt 2 is an entertainment experience for fans of psychological thrillers and horror. The subject matter of this game is in line with other mainstream entertainment choices for adult consumers. …Manhunt 2 is distinguishable from recent high-end video games by its unremitting bleakness and callousness of tone in an overall game context which constantly encourages visceral killing with exceptionally little alleviation or distancing. There is sustained and cumulative casual sadism in the way in which these killings are committed, and encouraged, in the game"(BBC, 19 June, 2007)
I agree with Rex about ridiculous criticism that people make over Fantasy
I mean fantasy is an entertainment. Wizards use magic, witches fly on the sky with broom stick, what's wrong with them??? Also, there are beautiful sub dimention within fantasy genre. Tolkin's work is an excellent example.
Fantasy is an entertainment. As Rex said, people should leave fantasy alone if they don't like it! They should complain when thier kids burn thier houses by sorcery! Or turn into a black cat, which wouldn't be a bad idea, acutally.
I know you are dissapointed with the ban of Manhunt 2, because you thought it was gonna get released but damn! they banned it.
To hell with censorships, right?
Personally, I am not sure if Manhunt 2 should be classified under the fantasy genre?
It's more of a gory, violence-filled video game, so I am really not surprised it got banned. The plot for this game itself is pretty twisted.
Also, I was appalled with the methods you can use in the game to 'kill' your victims.
You can drown an enemy into a toilet bowl, or bomb the victim face first with a fuse box, or strangle your victim with telephone chord... seriously, this just doesn't sound right.
ha, i did my fair share of gaming, and so-called psychological thriller game is definetely not my cup of tea.
hand me no-brainer super-mario tennis anytime, i will thank you for it.

Although I am not exactly too crazy about HP, I seriously do not think it is neccessary to ban the HP series. Seriously, I think kids today are able to recognize the difference between reality and fantasy. In my opinion,to ban the magical and fantastical, is to ban all fairy tales.
I think Harry Potter books have actually help to increase the interests of reading to the children. This is phenomenal because this is an era where children would rather play video games than play outside or watch TV instead of read a book.
So, if you ask me, I think it is absurd to censor a book with typical magical children's book themes that kids love and one that has made reading popular again.
Also, I believe banning one book leads down a slippery slope to ban others. Censorship of HP will deny our children the privilege of reading and using their imagination.
Goooooooooooooooooood, Pear, you are a critical angel who has the fair sense about the HP and some violent games. Me too, I don’t recommend sort of the games because they are too dark and serious uncomfortable to play them. But as HP, it is amazing story with magnificent imagination.
By the way, Pear, can you bring my DVD princess Mononoke back on Monday, i think i need review some infomation . just that DVD, you can keep the others as long as you finished.
Hay Pear I know Manhunt is not listed under the genres of fantasy, I'm just saying because of these people's stupid opinion, games such as Manhunt was banned in New Zealand. Regarding to Manhunt 2, it is still not clear at this stage whether the game will be able to make its way to the shelf since Rockstar is still fighting for the rights to publish the game. But if Rockstar wants to publish the game somehow, they usually needs to cut off and take out those violence parts in the game. Please don't be a censored version when it's out!! That will seriously affect the enjoyment of the game! (Anyway, that's way too off the topics now, we'll stop there and lets all hope the uncensored version of Manhunt 2 will be able to come out soon) :P
I just dont understand how kids these days can deal with these bloddy games....Im 22 and I cant even look at it...I cant even watch R18 movie without covering my ears and eyes by my hands :'(
Yes,I think before you play those blood games, you should have a really clear mind, because you have to know whatever the game is so real but that is made by those smart people. While, I think people play the fantasy games, because people always try to find things that can not do or do not exist in the reality, therefore, people can enjoy the game and find the interesting. During the game, people can never know what is going to happen in the next...that's why the fantasy genre relates in the video games nowadays. I also agree Victor that the fantasy genre will influence in animations.
About witchcraft and sorcery and people believing it. There’s thing going on out there called New-Age or Neo-Paganism. As of right now, there are tons of practising witches and sorcerers performing rituals and enchantments all over the world as a hobby/religion. And although I don’t think they can actually make things float in mid air, or turn people into animals; I think the rituals they perform are just as powerful as a prayer to God, or a good talk with an old friend.
And even if you are not a witch, I think everybody here have once had interests in the meaning of our star signs, or used our names and birthdates to cast a horoscope.
Criticism about Harry Potter being "orientational and instructional manuals of witchcraft woven into the format of entertainment" is laughable. How is that even criticism? How is instructing witchcraft wrong?
I think witchcraft is really cool, and I’d be more than happy to have someone teach me a thing or two.
Why shouldn’t witchcraft have the same rights as the currently dominant religions?
I think all this criticism is simply because there are people who are intolerant of belief systems other than their own.
Launch a crusade and lay siege to Hogwarts, the same way they did with Jerusalem 1000 years ago why don’t they :D
